The Transformer Services Lead directs the day-to-day execution and technical performance of a confidential electrical testing and field services company’s transformer services group. This role leads field assembly and reassembly, oil processing, component repair, warranty work, and field electrical testing on power transformers and associated apparatus. The Transformer Services Lead plans and assigns crews, owns quality and safety on assigned transformer scopes, approves field documentation, and serves as the senior technical point of contact for clients and equipment manufacturers. Candidates with a strong transformer background and limited electrical testing experience will be considered; the hiring client will support a structured transition into the testing side of the business for individuals interested in expanding their skill set.

What you will do

  • Lead the transformer services group, including crew assignment, daily work planning, equipment allocation, and technical direction across assigned transformer projects.
  • Direct and perform field assembly and reassembly of power transformers, including bushing installation, radiator and cooler bank installation, conservator and expansion systems, control cabinets, load tap changer compartments, and internal inspection.
  • Plan and execute oil processing operations, including hot oil circulation, vacuum dehydration and degasification, vacuum filling, dry air and nitrogen blanket management, vacuum hold and leak verification, and moisture and dryout monitoring.
  • Direct transformer repair scopes, including gasket and seal replacement, bushing replacement, load tap changer inspection and maintenance, untanking, core and coil work, and correction of leaks and shipping damage.
  • Manage warranty work in coordination with the original equipment manufacturer and the client, including damage assessment, documented findings, photographic records, repair scope development, and closeout reporting.
  • Perform and direct electrical testing on power transformers, including insulation resistance, power factor and dissipation factor testing, bushing C1 and C2 testing, excitation current, winding resistance, turns ratio, leakage reactance, sweep frequency response analysis, and core ground verification.
  • Perform and direct insulating fluid testing and sampling, including dissolved gas analysis sampling, dielectric breakdown, moisture content, acidity, interfacial tension, and furan sampling, and interpret results against acceptance criteria.
  • Direct testing and verification of transformer accessories and auxiliaries, including current transformers, temperature devices, sudden pressure and gas accumulation relays, cooling fans and pumps, control wiring, and load tap changer controls.
  • Oversee rigging, lifting, jacking, transport, and equipment handling activities in accordance with manufacturer instructions and company procedures, including review of impact and shock recorder data on delivered units.
  • Review manufacturer drawings, nameplates, outline and assembly drawings, factory manuals, control schematics, and test reports to confirm scope, configuration, and acceptance criteria before work begins.
  • Operate electrical test equipment including Doble, Manta, Vanguard, and Omicron platforms, work in associated apparatus test software including Doble Test Assistant (DTA), and write test and repair reports using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Direct material handling and equipment operation on the job site, including forklift and lifting equipment use in accordance with company procedures.
  • Conduct and lead Job Safety Task Analyses (JSTAs), safety briefings, and safety stand-down meetings; apply human performance and error elimination tools to identify, eliminate, or mitigate hazards; investigate and report incidents, near-misses, and safety observations in accordance with company protocols.
  • Represent the company in a QA/QC role, reviewing and approving field test data, repair documentation, and commissioning deliverables produced by assigned crews.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for clients on assigned transformer scopes, communicating status, findings, schedule impacts, and recommended corrective action.
  • Provide technical direction, training, and performance feedback to technicians; support hiring decisions and contribute to workforce development within the transformer services group.
  • Support proposal and estimating teams with technical input on transformer scope, crew requirements, durations, oil processing equipment, and specialty tooling for project pursuits.
  • Enforce corporate policies and procedures on assigned projects, including safety, quality, environmental, and operational standards, with particular attention to oil handling, containment, and spill response.
  • Participate in the client’s 24/7 emergency work and disaster recovery rotation, responding to outages, equipment failures, and storm events as assigned.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent field experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive field experience with power transformers, including assembly or reassembly, oil processing, repair, and warranty work, with demonstrated crew leadership capability.
  • Signature authority on field test and repair documentation, or demonstrated readiness to assume it.
  • Demonstrated discipline in redlining drawings and turning over accurate as-built documentation as part of every scope.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transformer field assembly practices, including bushings, radiators and cooling systems, conservator and expansion systems, load tap changers, and internal inspection procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with oil processing equipment and methods, including vacuum dehydration, degasification, hot oil circulation, vacuum filling, dry air and nitrogen systems, and moisture control.
  • Working knowledge of transformer field electrical testing methods and acceptance criteria. Candidates with a strong transformer assembly, processing, and repair background and limited testing experience will be considered, with client support for development into the testing side of the business.
  • Ability to read and interpret manufacturer drawings, nameplates, outline and assembly drawings, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead field crews, allocate equipment, and manage concurrent work fronts to meet client schedules.
  • Strong technical documentation skills with the ability to produce and review field reports, repair scopes, and test records.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Mathematical proficiency through trigonometry.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and health regulations applicable to high voltage electrical work and heavy equipment handling, including NFPA 70E and OSHA standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to represent the hiring client in client-facing and manufacturer-facing interactions.
  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Candidates who do not hold a Class A CDL at the time of hire must obtain one within the first 90 days of employment. An acceptable driving record and current medical card are also required; willingness to travel extensively, including overnight stays.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in support of projects across the United States and Canada, with travel approaching 90 percent on some assignments. Traveling schedules are tailored to the individual technician where project demands allow.
  • Willingness to participate in the 24/7 emergency work and disaster recovery on-call rotation.

Preferred qualifications

  • Original equipment manufacturer factory training on power transformers or load tap changers, such as Reinhausen, ABB, Waukesha, Siemens, GE, Hitachi Energy, or Pennsylvania Transformer.
  • Experience with Doble, Megger, Omicron, or similar test equipment platforms, including power factor, turns ratio, winding resistance, and sweep frequency response analysis.
  • Experience interpreting dissolved gas analysis and oil quality results and recommending corrective action.
  • Rigging, crane signaling, forklift, or heavy lift certification.
  • Prior experience in electric utility transmission and distribution, generation, industrial, or data center environments.
  • Experience supporting estimating, scoping, or proposal development for transformer field services.
  • Experience responding to emergency, outage, or storm restoration work on short notice.
  • Certification is not required for this role. NETA, NICET Electrical Power Testing, or Military Prime Power credentials are welcome, but demonstrated field capability is weighted equally. Technicians from utility protection and control shops and substation departments are encouraged to apply.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 to 12 hours).
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and transformer structures and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces, including transformer tank entry under a confined space permit.
  • Ability to work near energized electrical equipment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, gloves, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and comply with fit testing requirements when required by task.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles safely and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight stays.

Work environment

  • Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, humidity, and wind.
  • Exposure to electrical hazards, energized equipment, and arc flash environments.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, and industrial job site conditions.
  • Exposure to insulating oil, oil processing equipment, dry air and nitrogen systems, and elevated temperature surfaces during hot oil operations.
